The Advantages of Portfolio Assessment Techniques

The portfolio is a tool to showcase student talents and as such portfolios are collections of student work. These collections can be from one class or many. There are many advantages to using portfolio assessment techniques. Portfolios enhance parent and teacher communication, they put an emphasis on the learning process as well as the content, and grades are based on actual work instead of multiple-choice and essay tests. The collection shows student progress, activities and achievement.

Communication With Parents

Portfolios are effective tools to use for parent communication. During conference time, a portfolio shows families exactly what the student is working on and also the process of the work. A portfolio makes a much more personal presentation of what the student spends time on at school. The portfolio is graded using a scoring guide that the parent can easily understand. If the teacher does not use a scoring guide, as with younger grades, it is still an effective way to display student achievement. Parents can keep portfolios when completed as school keepsakes.

Emphasizes Learning Process

A portfolio shows the learning process that the student goes through to get a final result. The portfolio format allows for a very structured system to organize work. It allows for showing how small steps lead to the larger whole. The portfolio also allows students to see at a glance the stages of their work for self-reflection and evaluation. Allowing for self-evaluation gives students the opportunity to take full ownership of their work. It also makes them fully responsible for retaining the knowledge and demonstrating it through the curriculum.

Performance Based on Work

Authentic assessment is a large part of creating a portfolio. Students are assessed more realistically than by traditional paper-and-pencil tests. Students use their creativity to design projects to demonstrate their grasp of the curriculum instead of regurgitating memorized answers. This type of assessment lends itself to each child's individual learning style. Some children may choose to use art to demonstrate knowledge, while others may choose to write poetry or prose, to make videos or to create dramatizations. Portfolios are not designed so that every student's looks the same. Each portfolio is designed based on goals and ideas agreed upon by the student and teacher. This collaboration between student and teacher allows the teacher to get a better idea of what type of learner each student is. Performance-based assessment, such as portfolios, offer students a chance to individualize work and be creative.
